Learning Through Mistakes
My name is Jake and this is my story incident which led me to love RC helicopters…
I have had the privilege to own some gadgets and electronics which can be said to be unique and second to none. These range from the coolest video games that any kid would yearn for, which always surrounded my life as I grew up, to awesome smart phones, smart watches, digital cameras etc. It’s true that I hailed from a well-to-do family; hence most of these wishful-gadgets were part of my life.
But it is while I was in college that I came to realize of one thing that I should have had for ages. A remote controlled helicopter. I don’t know why I never gave it a thought, because I had all the chance to have it in my list too. Much still, while still a child I had several remote controlled toys.
The first time that I experienced the RC helicopter came in a very unique manner that it changed me. That day, my friends had I had gone out to watch a live sporting event which was taking place at our local stadium. I took my dad’s favorite sports car.
When we reached there, I secured a parking place near the tennis court which was located near the entrance. In the tennis court, there we a group of girls who were flying the RC copters. We parked the car and entered the stadium not paying attention to the girls.
The main game hadn’t started and was to take place late in the afternoon, so we busied ourselves watching other events taking place. Not long we got boy=red. Like all college boys, we decided to go after the girls. Your bet is good as mine; we decided to approach the girls that we had left at the tennis court playing with the toy copters.
After pleasantries, we started our show off. I was the first to challenge the girls that I could fly the RC plane in some maneuvers that none of them could. This sparked some heated debate with the girls arguing that they had been practicing the hobby for quiet long and that there was no way that I could beat them at it.
Determined to win the heart of the girls, I promised them a hundred bucks if I win the challenge. One girl named Samantha decided to let me use her remote control of a heli that she was flying. Of course I wasn’t new at using the device, like I said; I had used it since I was the child on my RC toys, but not a copter.
With all the confidence, I could master, I took the device and started the copter. I managed to control, it to take off from the ground, which was not that easy because I realized that it needed concentration to determine when it was ready to take off. I must have done hastily, because after takeoff, it started losing balance. I tried to control it but I pressed the wrong buttons and in full speed, it crashed on a sedan which was parked nearby smashing its screen.
I panicked so much as the girls screamed; some in horror while others in laughter. I had done a stupid mistake. That was it. My dad got charged for the car as well as Sam’s helicopter which belonged to a RC club that I too later joined. I made friends with Sam, and still wonder why she has never let me take her out. Maybe she believes that I’m still a reckless show-off.
